NYSSA – The Grant Union High School girls basketball team lost 32-54 to Nyssa’s Lady Bulldogs.

“We came out and fought hard in the first half, but weren’t knocking down open shots.  The score was tied 18-18 at the half,” said coach Steve Speth. “Nyssa went on a big run early in the 3rd quarter, outrunning us for easy baskets.”

“We tried to slow down Nyssa’s strong point guard Marissa Gonzalez by keeping Hailey McConnell matched up with her.  Hailey did a very good job containing her and holding her to only 5 points,” Speth said, “however, other Nyssa players were able to make shots.”

Leading scorer for Grant Union was Caity Speth with 8; followed by Elle Rawlins and DJ Kodesh, each with 6; and Mackinsey Nash, Amanda Branstetter and Sierra Burton, 4 each.

Rebounding leaders were Speth and Hailey McConnell, each with 8. Leading in assists was Nash with 4.

The Grant Union girls were set to play at Baker on Tuesday evening. Results of the game were unavailable at Eagle presstime.

The team travels to Riverside to meet the Lady Pirates this Friday, Jan. 14, for a 6 p.m. game. On Saturday, Jan. 15, the girls travel to the home of the Umatilla Lady Vikings for a 3 p.m. contest.
