JOHN DAY - "Starting 2-0 in league is a good place to be," said Grant Union High School volleyball coach Shae Speth.

Last week, the Lady Prospectors beat Crane and then won two more road matches against Eastern Oregon League foes Umatilla and Riverside.

At Crane on Thursday, Sept. 16, the Prospector varsity team beat the Mustangs in five sets, 25-22, 25-16, 14-25, 19-25, 15-7.

"We played very well our first two games, then broke down serving and on serve-receive the third and fourth sets, before getting back to playing our game in the fifth," said Speth.

Mackinsey Nash had 10 kills; Caity Speth had seven aces, and Kaitlyn Slinkard chocked up 18 digs.

The junior varsity team won in three sets.

Saturday, Sept. 18 at Umatilla, the junior varsity won in two sets. The varsity won in three sets: 25-11, 25-15, 25-5.

"The first and third sets we played and served pretty well, but had some serving problems during the second set, giving Umatilla six free points off of missed serves," said Speth.

Caity Speth made eight kills; Shannon Croghan hit seven aces.

Traveling on to Riverside that day, the varsity won in 3 sets: 25-22, 25-17, 26-24. There was no junior varsity match.

"Riverside came out strong and hitting hard, but we got a few great digs and cut into their lead with some great serving, then pulled ahead to win that first set," said Speth. "We had seven team blocks against Riverside, which always gets the girls fired up since we're always quite a bit shorter at the net than our opponent."

She noted that Grant Union fought off three set points by Riverside before claiming the win.

"The girls fought hard - they wanted the win," she said.

Nash scored 10 kills and 10 digs; Hailey Cates had five aces; Hailey McConnell got in nine digs; Sierra Burton provided four block assists; and Caity Speth contributed three block assists.

The Grant Union junior varsity-2 team had a home contest versus Prairie City on Tuesday, Sept. 21, past press time.

The junior varsity-2, junior varsity, and varsity teams will play at Burns this Thursday, Sept. 23, with varsity starting time at 4 p.m.. The junior varsity and varsity teams play Culver at Grant Union Friday, Sept. 24, with varsity starting at 4 p.m..
