BURNS - Grant Union wrestlers continued to gain expertise on the mat last Saturday, Jan. 30 at Burns.
They competed with matmen from Burns, Riverside, La Pine and Crane.
Ethan Kowing, 215, and Levi Gagnon, 103, placed first in their weight classes.
In his final match, Kowing pinned Landon Hanner of Burns to finish the day at 3-0. Kowing's win moves his overall record to 24-2.
After winning three matches at 103, Gagnon lost an exhibition match to Gustavo Madrigal of Riverside. Madrigal placed first at 112. Gagnon's record is now 30-3.
At 135, Alex Kygar was 2-2 against his opponents. Adam Berry and Will Mercado shared the 140 slot. Mercado ended the day at 3-0.
Prospector wrestlers Jake Batease and Zach Stegman were sidelined with injuries. However, coach Dave Naibert said each is expected to return to the tournament at Heppner this Saturday, Feb. 6.
In other wrestling news, middle school wrestlers traveled Jan. 21 to Heppner with the high school team and wrestled against fellow middle schoolers from Heppner, Riverside and Irrigon.
Caleb Batease, at 195 pounds, took first. He was still undefeated after three tournaments.
Taking second place were Arron Palmer (heavyweight), Lane Woodcock (140), and Kaleb Adams (85). Third place finishers were Robby Bullock at 100, Kyle Cook at 110, Bo Cook at 95, and Randell Smith at 90. Also representing Mt. Vernon were wrestlers Chance Barrietua, Antonio Dancer and Khol Goin.
