Grant Union def. Horizon Christian 4-2
HOOD RIVER - The Grant Union High School soccer team evened its Mountain West Conference record at 1-1 with a 4-2 victory over Horizon Christian on Friday, Oct. 3.
"This was an important win for us, and it gets us right back in the picture for a post-season playoff position," Grant Union coach Ken Purnell said.
Horizon Christian took a 1-0 lead at the 29-minute mark of the first half before Prospector Kerry Ashmead tied the score on the ensuing kickoff off an assist from Kevin Percy.
The score remained tied at halftime before Danny Cosgrove, off Percy's second assist, connected early in the second half for a 2-1 Prospector lead.
Horizon Christian answered at the 52-minute mark to tie the score once again, but Ashmead's second goal of the match 30 seconds later put Grant Union in front to stay.
Percy gave the Pros an insurance goal late in the match to seal the victory.
Salem Academy def. Grant Union 3-1
On Saturday, Oct. 4, the Prospectors took on Salem Academy in a non-league match, coming up on the short end of a 3-1 score.
"We dominated the first half of the match out-shooting them 22-8, but couldn't put the ball in the net," Purnell said. "They ended up with a 3-0 lead at halftime."
Purnell said the second half was more evenly played, and Percy scored Grant Union's only goal on a header off an assist from Ashmead.
The Prospectors (4-5-1) hosted Umatilla in an important Mountain West Conference match on Tuesday, Oct. 7. The results of that match were not available at press time. A return match will be played with Horizon Christian in Hood River on Friday, Oct. 10.
