Health Tip of the Week: Cat bites are prone to infection

Although dog bites can be serious, only 5% of them become infected, whereas 80% of cat bites get infected. All cat bites that puncture the skin should be evaluated by a health care provider. Bites on the hand, especially if they are deep or near a joint, are at greatest risk for a serious infection and often require antibiotics. They may even require hospitalization if the infection involves the joint or bone.
