HEPPNER - Grant Union High School wrestlers Jake Batease and Caleb Batease dominated the heavyweight divisions at the Bank of Eastern Oregon Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 4, in Heppner.
In the first round of the semifinals, 285-pound Jake pinned Josh Hendrix of Culver in 52 seconds.
Jake went on to pin Ben Kamroho of Imbler for the championship.
Caleb pinned Tristan Morehouse of Enterprise in 1:05 of the first round of the semifinals. He pinned Daniel Kohlhepp of Enterprise for the championship of the 220-pound division.
Jake's record is 26-2 for the season; Caleb's is 30-4.
Two other Prospectors competed in the tournament, which also drew grapplers from Adrian, Elgin, Imbler, McLoughlin (junior varsity), Santiam, Heppner, Crane, Enterprise, Irrigon, Union, Culver, Joseph, Riverside and Wallowa.
At 182 pounds, Kyle Carpenter lost his final match to Matthew Staigle of Joseph and finished in sixth place.
Reuben Harvey, at 126 pounds, showed great improvement but lost two hard-fought matches, noted Grant Union coach Dave Naibert.
The Prospectors head to the Pine Eagle Tournament at Halfway this Saturday, Feb. 11. It is their last regular match before district competition on Saturday, Feb. 18, at Burns.
Naibert expects three or four more wrestlers to compete at Halfway. The Grant Union team has been coping with illness and injuries this season.
