Herbert H. Martin, 94, of Long Creek died Feb. 29 at the Blue Mountain Nursing Home in Prairie City.
Visitation will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 3. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 4 at Olney Cemetery in Pendleton.
Mr. Martin was born Jan. 25, 1910 in Kentucky to Ben and Nancy Martin and came west in a covered wagon, settling in Monument.
He attended school in Cottonwood and worked up and down the John Day Valley before moving to Long Creek where he was a rancher for over 50 years.
Mr. Martin married Nelda Weissenfluh in 1935; they had four children.
He enjoyed his 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, hunting with his grandsons, playing cards and visiting and telling stories to his friends and family.
Mr. Martin had been an Elk member for 46 years, served in the U.S. Army as a cook in Hawaii and drove school bus for Long Creek School District for many years.
Survivors include his wife, of Long Creek; son, Dale of Long Creek; two daughters, Connie Wood of John Day and Marla Barnhart of Pendleton; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Jerry and one grandson.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Elks Charities or the Long Creek Ambulance Service through Driskill Memorial Chapel.
