HINES - Local organizations and agencies will be setting up the annual hunter information station at Erickson's Sentry Supermarket in Hines.
The station will serve hunters on Thursday and Friday, Sept. 26-27, from 7 a.m.-6 p.m.
Hunters can purchase maps; pick up a variety of informational brochures, including hunting regulations; learn about current access closure areas; any fire restrictions; prescribed burn projects; and other hunting-related issues at the station.
Carolyn Freeborn, BLM's Acting Andrews Resource Area Field Manager, said hunters will need to pay special attention to the access changes on Steens Mountain resulting from passage of the Steens Mountain Cooperative Management and Protection Act of 2000, which established several special designations, including the Steens Mountain Wilderness Area.
Organizations participating in the hunter station include: Erickson's Sentry Supermarket, Harney County, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the Harney County Chamber of Commerce, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, the U.S. Forest Service and the BLM. Erickson's will provide free coffee and will arrange for a hunter's breakfast beginning at 7 a.m. on Thursday and Friday.
