Comments from Coach Barb Miller-Sohr: Competitive swimming takes hard work and dedication. These athletes practice from 6 to 8 a.m. each morning, and many swim an additional hour at 5 p.m. daily. Practices include dryland training, stroke drills, and endurance swimming of a mile or more per session.

At swim meets the competitors swim four or five events each day, all at their fastest speed. It makes for a grueling weekend. Teammates support each other, cheering and encouraging the other swimmers as they take their turn in the pool. By Sunday evening everyone is pretty well wiped out from all of the activity, the hot sun and the energy expenditure of high speed competition.

Since many of our swimmers are also in All Stars Baseball and Softball, we won't have the full team of 46 swimmers in competition until those tournaments are over.

Thirty John Day swimmers competed at the Prineville Invitational on July 6, 7 and 8.

John Day Swim Team Meet Schedule:

Lakeview --July 13, 14 and 15.

Burns --July 20, 21 and 22.

John Day --July 28 and 29.

East Cascade District Championships in Burns August 3, 4 and 5.
