CANYON CITY – A John Day man is facing charges of rape and sexual abuse involving a girl under the age of 14.

Casey James Wood, 27, pleaded not guilty to the charges Thursday, Sept. 6, in Grant County Circuit Court.

A Grant County grand jury indicted Wood on one count of second-degree rape, two counts of second-degree sodomy, and three counts of first-degree sexual abuse. The indictment cites contact with the girl on June 27.

The indictment had also included four counts of patronizing a prostitute, but defense attorney Markku Sario objected to the inclusion of those counts as separate from the June 27 incident.

District Attorney Ryan Joslin on Monday filed separate paperwork alleging the prostitution counts.

Trial is set for January.
