Joseph "Ted" Carper, 66, died Feb. 15 at Cottonwood, Ariz.

He was born Aug. 16, 1936, in Pendlton, the only child of Joseph Theodore and Virginia (Wurl) Carper.

As a young man, he worked in the woods with his dad. During high school he played baseball and graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in 1954. He lived at John Day until 1959. He was employed as a bank loan officer/credit collections manager.

Mr. Carper served in the United States Army 1959-70. He was with the Wyoming Army National Guard from December 1974-March 1980; served with the Arizona Army National Guard from April 1980-May 1985; then returned to the U.S. Army 1985-86. During his service, he earned several awards and decorations.

On April 1, 1964, he married Corliss Neumann while they were both with the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Sill, Okla.

They resided in Cottonwood, Ariz., since 1980.

Mr. Carper is survived by his wife, Corliss of Cottonwood, Ariz.; three daughters, Beverly, Cindy and Lisa; two sons, Michael and Kyle; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

At his request, no services are planned. Memorial contributions can be made to the Verde Valley Humane Society in Cottonwood, Ariz.
