Nov. 23, 1911 - Dec. 31, 2002

Former Grant County resident Joseph Walter Legler, 91, of Coos Bay died Dec. 31.

He was born Nov. 23, 1911, to Henry and Anna (Zweifel) Legler on the family ranch at Round Basin near Hamilton.

After completing his education at the Round Basin School, he was engaged in ranching with his father until 1947, when he moved to Mt. Vernon to work for the San Juan and Lambford Lumber mills for several years. He was a carpenter for 19 years, then retired in 1976.

On June 20, 1948, he married Irma Rae Thompson at John Day, where they resided for many years.

He was a member of the Long Creek Masonic Lodge No. 90 for more than 50 years.

Mr. Legler is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Theda "Teddy" and Jim Underhill of Coos Bay; two grandchildren and their spouses, Jennifer and Friend Green and Jamie and Tiffani Kerns; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Irma on Oct. 20, 2002; one brother, two sisters and a granddaughter.

Funeral services officiated by Pastor Duane Cheadle were held Jan. 3 at Driskill Memorial Chapel, which was in charge of arrangements.

Memorial contributions can be made to the Grant Union High School Scholarship Fund or the Alzheimer's Association.
