La Grande native arrives at Monument via Thailand

Douglas Peterson will spend his first year of teaching at Monument School instructing seventh- through 12th-grade English. He also takes on the physical education class and serves as assistant coach for football.

Peterson was born in La Grande and grew up in Gladstone, near Oregon City.

During his Western Oregon University undergraduate studies, he majored in economics with a minor in English. He received his master of art in teaching in 2003 with a license in English and social studies.

He likes outdoor activities such as fishing, camping and hiking and plays the guitar. He has enjoyed exploring the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument and participated in a week-long paleontology workshop with others from around the region.

Peterson recently spent a month in Thailand where his sister was teaching English.
