LaVerne Justus Matteson, 82, of Prairie City, died March 3 at Blue Mountain Nursing Home. No services are planned at this time.

Mr. Matteson was born July 11, 1929, to Elmer and Martha (Lawson) Matteson near Monument. He lived most of his life in the Monument area and on the coast.

As a young man, he worked near Ione. He drove log trucks and worked various jobs.

He married Grace Hunt, with whom he had three children. They later divorced.

Survivors include daughters, Martha Rosenstiel of Post Falls, Idaho, and Norma Cox of Monument; son, Ralph Matteson of Reno, Nev.; sister, Jessie Scott of Heppner; eight grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Dale Matteson; and sister Doris Kingman.

Arrangements are under the care of Driskill Memorial Chapel, 241 S. Canyon Blvd., John Day, OR 97845.
