To the Editor:

It is with dismay that I write this letter regarding the 2012 Grant County Fair. I participated in 4-H and my children have carried on the tradition. I am thoroughly disheartened by the cost of attending this year’s fair.

As 4-H parents, one must attend the fair – not only to root on your children, but to make sure they behave and stay safe. For this privilege my husband and I had to pay $40 for the week. Their grandparents, brother, cousins also paid to get into the fair.

Multiply that by all 4-H participants and that’s a good chunk of change the county gets from 4-H. I am also upset over the lack of a free day. I missed seeing Blue Mountain Nursing Home residents attending the fair. The attendance was obviously down, and I know some people didn’t come because of the lack of a carnival, but I also think the cost of attending was a deterrent. I also spoke with some of the vendors and the cost of a table space seemed outrageous.

My friend attended Redmond fair and paid $19 for the whole week with much more entertainment. With the economy the way it is I can’t imagine that raising the price was a smart move. I hope the fair board reconsiders the entry fee for the 2013 Fair.
