To the Editor:

To the concerned citizens of John Day and Grant County: Are you aware that Step Forward Activities (formerly known as the Bullard Ranch) are in the process of acquiring two city lots located in an established neighborhood on East Main Street?

Step Forward Activities is purchasing both 872 and 876 E. Main Street to develop two group homes to accommodate disadvantaged adults. While it is essential that the mentally challenged are properly housed and cared for, situating two group homes among a neighborhood would not only be a detriment to the area home values but highly inappropriate.

The city manager has stated that nothing can be done, that the development is already set in motion. Surely, there must be a way to impede this action and find a residence for these adults in a more suitable area.

We are asking the citizens of John Day to show your support by attending the public hearing at 7 p.m. June 10 in the John Day council chambers located at 450 E. Main Street in John Day.
