JOHN DAY - If you had a few moments to talk with President Bush, what would you say?
Sherry Lauer-Dress is pondering that question as she prepares to meet the president at a dinner July 21 in Washington, D.C.
"It's quite an honor from my perspective," she said. "I'm going to tell President Bush that Eastern Oregon is behind him 100 percent and that we all pray for him daily. He's a godly president. I believe God put him in office to turn the nation around.
"He is restoring the Constitution, which was based on biblical principles."
The midwife and co-owner of the Naturally Yours health food store will travel to the nation's capital for a series of meetings of the National Republican Congressional Committee's Business Advisory Council.
This year's designation as an honorary chairman and award of a timepiece at the meetings and dinner follows a leadership award she received last year from U.S. House Majority Leader Tom DeLay.
Lauer-Dress, a certified licensed midwife for 30 years who has delivered about 1,500 babies, believes she caught the attention of the advisory council after former Gov. John Kitzhaber appointed her to the state Board of Midwifery.
She was subsequently reappointed by Gov. Ted Kulongoski.
"I also represent small-business owners," she said, referring to her co-ownership of the Naturally Yours store with Doris Harper.
