EUGENE – Area students participated in the Oregon Music Educators Association All-State honor choir and band concerts Jan. 14.

Humbolt Elementary fifth-graders Serena Pace and Izabella Garcia were nominated by Humbolt music teacher Louise Kienzle to participate in the all-state elementary choir.

Kienzle noted the girls memorized six selections including “Hine ma Tov” and “Joy in My Heart.”

Under the direction of Judith Herrington, founder and conductor of the Tacoma Youth Chorus, the girls joined a 120-member chorus which performed to a full house at the Soreng Theatre in the Hult Center.

The girls both said they enjoyed meeting new people at the event.

“I learned how to read music much better,” said Izabella.

“Maybe next year we can have more kids go,” Serena said.

Kienzle said the choir received a “rousing” standing ovation.

“Their work was well worth the incredible experience they had,” she said. “This is an experience these girls will long remember.”

Mt. Vernon Middle School choir and band director Mary Ann Vidourek took three students to the event.

Ashlie Pulleiro (oboe) and Ricky Weickum (percussion) also performed at the conference with a middle school band, which included a full percussion section and several oboists.

Meisha Meyerholz also attended and was in a four-part women’s choir.

“It was an amazing experience and really fun,” Meisha said. “We did well with the songs.”
