JOHN DAY - The door is open for several timber sales in the large-scale Silvies Canyon project thanks to the approval of the environmental impact statement.
Regional Forester Linda Goodman upheld the Malheur National Forest decision on the Silvies Canyon EIS, Nov. 12, said Malheur Forest Supervisor Roger Williams.
The first three sales to be offered are the Burnt, Curry and Curry II sales, with approximately 13.5 million board feet. The first of these sales will be advertised in local newspapers beginning Dec. 3, with the other two sales being advertised in the following weeks. Additional sales from this project area will be offered later in 2004.
"I'm pleased that we are able to move forward at this time," said Williams.
"This is an important project for addressing two of the greatest threats our forests face, invasive species and wildfire. It is also very important economically and for improving other resource conditions."
Projects coming from the Silvies Canyon EIS are part of the forest's overall work program, which includes future salvage sales, fuel reduction projects, and other projects to restore the health of forest resources, said Williams.
