Mary Marie Mecham

Mary Marie (Hall) Mecham, a private kindergarten teacher, school librarian and tutor, died July 18, 2005, at Blue Mountain Hospital, with her husband by her side. She was 67.

A graveside service was held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 23 at Canyon City Cemetery, with Pastor Andy Anderson of the Cornerstone Christian Fellowship officiating.

Mrs. Mecham was born March 11, 1938, in Los Angeles, Calif. Her parents came to Mt. Vernon for a short time while she was in grade school, and returned to Mt. Vernon when she was a junior in high school. As a child, she worked in her parent's restaurants, including the one built on the corner of highways 26 and 395 in Mt. Vernon.

"Minnie" as she was nicknamed in high school after a school play character she portrayed, met Vern Mecham, whose parents had moved to Mt. Vernon from Adrian, after he had left the Air Force in March 1956.-They were married on July 29, 1956.

Mrs. Mecham loved and cared for children her entire life, first as a daycare provider in her home, and later as a teacher. She and her husband supported the sports teams of Mt. Vernon from the early 1960s until the school was consolidated with Grant Union in 1990. During this time, she not only supported the children of Mt. Vernon, but acted as a chaperone, carried sports equipment in her own vehicle, was the drill team advisor, and kept the basketball score book. She always had a smile for everyone. Mrs. Mecham retired in 1997, after working for the school for 26 years.

Mrs. Mecham was also the Parent-Teacher Association president for many years, and, with help from several other long time Mt. Vernon residents, including her husband and daughter, and with the help of many local businesses, made sure that the annual Easter Egg Hunt was held, as well as the annual awards banquet for grade and high school athletes. Mrs. Mecham was also a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha sorority for years, taking part in the many activities ESA was involved in, including the annual Grant County Fair and Rodeo.

Mrs. Mecham is survived by her husband of almost 49 years, Vern; daughter Carolyn of Redding, Calif; and two grandchildren.
