LA PINE – All six members of the Grant Union High School wrestling team took medals at the La Pine Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 22 – their second competition in a week.

The event followed a dual meet at Heppner on Thursday, Jan. 20.

At Heppner, Levi Gagnon, Caleb Batease, Jake Batease and Alex Kygar had first-place performances, while Zach Stegman wrestled to a second place, and Kyle Carpenter and Reuben Harvey, took third-place honors.

In the round-robin competition, Gagnon went 2-0, Caleb Batease went 3-0, Jake Batease went 2-0, and Kygar went 3-0, while Stegman went 2-1, Carpenter and Harvey went 1-2.

Coach Dave Naibert was especially happy that all six Grant Union athletes who went to La Pine earned medals. Along with 3A schools Grant Union and Lakeview, athletes came from 5A Summit and Mountain View, 4A Douglas, Sisters and La Pine, and 2A Oakridge.

Gagnon, Kygar and Stegman took first-place medals for their efforts. Jake Batease received a second-place medal, and Caleb Batease and Harvey attained third-place honors.

It was Harvey’s fifth meet, and the result reflects the progress made by the young wrestler, said Naibert.

Gagnon went 2-0 in the 112-pound weight class, continuing an undefeated (18-0) season.

Kygar is 15-5 for the season, wrestling at 135 pounds. Stegman is 11-3 at 215.

Jake Batease is 17-5 at 285, while Caleb Batease is 15-3 at 215. Harvey is 4-10 at 103.

The Pros will face Baker and La Grande at Baker this Thursday, Jan. 27, and Baker and Ontario at Baker next Tuesday, Feb. 1.
