Dec. 31, 1920 - Sept. 9, 2003

Former Monument resident Merrial D. Vinson, 82, died Sept. 9 in Pendleton.

She was born Dec. 31, 1920, at Lexington to Oris and Catie (Fridley) Padberg. The family later moved to Heppner, then returned to Lexington where she was raised and attended school.

On May 20, 1939, she married L.D. Walter Vinson at Pasco, Wash. The couple moved to Clarks Canyon near Heppner in 1942, then moved to Cupper Creek between Kimberly and Monument in 1945. They settled at Monument in 1968.

Mr. Vinson died in 1996 and Mrs. Vinson moved to Ukiah in 1997, then to Juniper House in Pendleton in 2000.

She was a 30-year member of the Rebekah Lodge. She enjoyed sewing and rock collecting.

Mrs. Vinson is survived by daughters: Lora Vaughn of Nimpo Lake, British Columbia, Canada, and Mary Corley of Ukiah; brother, Charley Padberg of Dayton, Wash.; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, son Harvey Vinson and brother Eldon Padberg.

A graveside service was held Sept. 13 at Monument Cemetery.
