Under a new interim mining regulation issued July 9, mineral operators proposing to conduct exploration or mining activities on National Forest System (NFS) lands are required to submit a notice of intent if their activity might cause disturbance of surface resources.

The new interim rule gives the district ranger authority and responsibility to determine the effects of a proposed activity. The interim rule went into effect Aug. 9, 30 days after its

publication in the Federal Register. Public comments must be received by Sept. 7 and will be used to form a final rule.
