JOHN DAY - Roger Williams, forest supervisor announced that the Monument Fire area is open to the public.

"Logging operations have ceased in this area making safe access possible," said Williams. "We know this is a popular elk hunting area and we are pleased that we are able to open the area in time for elk season. However, fire burned areas are often sensitive to soil disturbance and we are asking visitors to assist us in preventing resource damage by limiting off-road vehicle use in the fire burned portions of this area."

For more information, call the Malheur National Forest supervisor's office (541) 575-3000 or the Prairie City Ranger District (541) 820-3800.
