September 24 was a truly wonderful day in Monument as lots of family gathered to celebrate MayDette Hinton's 88th birthday, complete with a beautiful cake. On hand for the big event were MayDette's two daughters, MaryElla Neal and Shannon McKinnon; 83-year-old sister, Becky Stewart and her husband, Dalton from Canyon City; and lots of longtime friends, including Bob and Rhoene Ledgerwood and Betty Lewis from Mesa, Ariz.; LaVonne Slinkard of John Day; and Don and Virginia Moore of Long Creek.

Matt Arbogast of Tracy, Calif., grandson of Jack and Clyde Cavender, also attended. Jenny Pinson of Meridian, Miss., brought 7-month-old niece ElleNoel, the daughter of Jenny's twin sister, Stacy who lives in Idaho. Jenny and Stacy are twin daughters of Jim and Vonda Stubblefield and granddaughters of Cora Stubblefield and Gene and Donna Campbell.

With the arrival of harvest time, Gene and Donna brought a box of apples to share. There is so much good produce shared at the mealsite and it is appreciated and used.

Chili, cornbread, cheese slices and tossed green salad comprised the Sept. 24 meal.

Drawing winners were Sue Hyde, free meal; MaryElla Neal, certificate from Len's Drug; Grace Sweek, NAPA Auto Parts; and Donna Campbell, Chester's Thriftway. We appreciate the merchants who provide the donations and thanks is extended to Bob Hawthorne who visits merchants monthly to secure the certificates.

The Monument Extension group will meet 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the senior center for a meeting and potluck meal. At 1 p.m. Grant County Extension Agent Elaine Husted will present the program, "The Art of Salad Making & Healthy Meals." Everyone in the community is invited to attend.
