MT. VERNON - Horse enthusiasts across Grant County have reason to get excited - a new competition is coming to the area.
The Cinnabar Mountain Play Days will start July 25 in Mt. Vernon and will run until Nov. 7. The opening competition will begin at 9 a.m.
Several classes of events will be offered including: barrels, poles, key hole, surry race, steak race, potato race, ribbon race, boot race, egg race and set a buck.
Organizer Jackie Osborne said she started the event because she loves horses and it also gives kids something to keep them busy.
"There are so many kids that don't have stuff to do," Osborne said.
There will be several age groups for competition. The lead line group is open to everyone; the peewee is for age 6 and under; the junior group is for 7- to 9-year-olds; the intermediate group is for 10- to 14-year-olds; the senior division is for 15- to 17-year-olds and the adult division is for those 18 and over.
Stallions will not be allowed.
The dues are $25 for a family and $15 per person. There will be a $2 fee for each person per class. All-day events will cost $10.
Osborne said there has been a lot of interest in the event.
The play days are scheduled once a month through November. Osborne is hoping to continue the play days into the winter months at an indoor arena.
