Obamacare extension granted

Wash. D.C. -- (NBC News) Anyone who starts the application process of enrolling in the government's health insurance plan by the end of March will get extra time to do so.

The Obama administration announced the enrollment extension Wednesday.

Health and Human Services officials say HealthCare.gov is experiencing a surge in demand as the March 31st deadline nears and they want to make sure consumers have time to complete their enrollments online or over the phone.

The site had more than a million visitors Monday.

The White House did not say how long the extension will last.
