LA GRANDE, Ore. (AP) - Union County District Attorney Tim Thompson says sheriff's detectives are investigating the weekend death of a 59-year-old man shot by a hunting arrow.

Thompson on Tuesday identified the victim as Paul Rudd of La Grande. The district attorney says Rudd was hunting Sunday with 53-year-old Mark Omann of La Grande.

The two were hunting a bull elk and reportedly standing within 15 feet of each other when Omann's compound bow discharged. Thompson says the arrow hit Rudd in the head, killing him almost instantly.

The district attorney says the investigation includes accident reconstruction.
