KIMBERLY - On Sunday, Oct. 5, John Day Fossil Beds National Monument will offer a ranger-led backcountry hike into the Painted Hills Unit of the monument. This three-hour hike will begin at 10 a.m. at the Painted Hills Unit picnic area and traverse several backcountry miles over varied terrain. Good hiking boots, a water bottle, walking stick, sun hat and bag lunch are recommended for the hike. Pets are not allowed backcountry in the monument. This hike is offered rain or shine; advanced reservations are not required and there is no fee.
