The word around Hollywood is that Universal Pictures has optioned Doom and has hired Enda McCallion to make his directorial debut, with The Rock set to star.
The movie will apparently be based on the third game in the series, which focuses on a vastly outnumbered hero fighting the forces of hell as they come from a portal onto a deserted paramilitary base on Mars, where a scientific experiment has gone awry.
Game review: Extremely impressive from a technical standpoint yet behind the times from a first-person-shooter design standpoint: This is the dichotomy that is Doom 3, the sequel from well-known Texas-based developer id Software. Doom 3 is quite possibly the best-looking game ever, with lifelike and surprisingly expansive environments. At the same time, when you look past the spectacular appearance, you'll find a conventional, derivative shooter. The game's overall ranking from 64 media outlets is 8.8 on a scale of 10.
