Portland Police have identified the officer injured in a shooting near Wilson High School Wednesday and the suspect, who died at the scene.
The officer is John Romero, with the Youth Services Division. Romero was injured on his hand and arm, and is recuperating at home.
The suspect, who died at the scene, has been identified as 49-year-old Kelly Vern Swoboda.
Romero and two other officers had increased patrols in the area after students reported being followed by a suspicious van earlier this week.
Police say the incident began when a 911 call came in reporting the van was in the area again.
The three officers first observed the van and its driver on SW Dewitt Street. Two of the officers were searching for the driver in a nearby library when officer Romero saw the suspect walking down Cheltenham Street.
According to the police, witnesses reported that the suspect ignored Romero's commands. Both Officer Romero and the man fired weapons. Swoboda was killed, and Romero was transported to OHSU for treatment.
Police say there is a warrant for Swoboda's arrest for robbery and he is a suspect in a kidnapping attack that occurred in January.
They say they have confirmed that he was the person involved in the associated reports of a suspicious van following kids.
