KEIZER - The Grant Union High School Prospectors defeated the Salem Academy Crusaders, 9-2, to win the 2A state baseball championship at Volcanoes Stadium.

The Pros finished the season at 31-0. The Crusaders finished at 23-4-1.

It is the third state championship for Grant Union coach Art Thunell, who recently has whispered about retiring.

Senior Kerry Ashmead started on the mound and won his 14th game of the season, pitching out of a few jams before Toby Thomas came in to get the final six outs, including striking out the side.

The big inning for the Pros was the fifth, when they scored four times to pull away.

Eagle sports writer Tim Adams was at the stadium, and his report and photographs will be part of a special sports section in the June 8 edition of the Eagle.
