VALE - The Grant Union baseball team clinched the second-seed from the Eastern Independent League and a state playoff berth after splitting its doubleheader at Vale on May 12.

The Prospectors are scheduled to play their first playoff game at home on May 22 at 4:30 p.m against either Gold Beach, Coquille, or Reedsport.

In the May 12 contest, the Prospectors lost the first game 3-1 despite allowing only two Viking hits. Cash Wenick pitched 4 1/3 innings and struck out seven, walked one, and hit three Viking batters.

The Prospectors were clinging to a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth inning when Wenick walked the lead-off hitter, who then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.

Hoping to force a double-play ball, the Prospectors intentionally walked the next hitter, who then advanced to second base on a ground-ball out to the short-stop.

With Viking runners at second and third bases, the Prospectors then walked the Vikings' No. 7 hitter to load the bases. The next hitter drew a walk and forced in a run, tying the game at 1-1. The Vikings then took a 2-1 lead on a base hit to right field.

Alec Oliver pitched the final 2 2/3 innings and gave up a single and struck out one Viking hitter.

Keldon Martin had the only RBI for the Prospectors on a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning.

Taylor Myers and Dustin Lippert were both 1 for 4 at the plate, and Dustin Silva and Tyler Roberts each added singles.

In the second game, after being down 8-4 heading into the top of the seventh inning, the Prospectors took advantage of seven walks and scored five runs to take a 9-8 lead.

Vale then tied the game at 9-9 in the bottom of the seventh inning on a single by Darren Johnson, sending the game into extra innings.

After a scoreless eighth inning, the Prospectors took a 10-9 lead in the ninth after Cody Williams singled in Myers. But the Vikings answered with a run of their own in in the bottom of the inning, sending the game into a tenth.

With the score tied 10-10, the Prospectors scored three runs in the top of the 10th to take a 13-10 lead. After Vale scored two runs in the bottom of the inning, the Prospectors picked off a Viking baserunner to win the game 13-12.

Keldon Martin went 1 for 3 at the plate and Tyler Roberts was 1 for 2. Cody Williams went 1 for 5 with two RBIs and and Myers went 1 for 4 with 3 RBIs.
