SALEM - Grant Union High School athletics will move to the 2A level beginning in fall 2012.

The Oregon State Activities Association executive board unanimously approved the move from 3A to 2A, based on enrollment figures.

Grant Union will compete in 2A District (4), the Blue Mountain Conference. Other schools in the league are Elgin, Enterprise, Heppner, Irrigon, Pilot Rock, Stanfield, Union and Weston-McEwen.

"Although this is not good news in regards to dropping enrollment, it does place Grant Union in a classification that enrollment numbers justify," said Grant Union Junior-Senior High School Principal Curt Shelley.

Enrollment for the 2A classification ranges from 106 to 225. As of early this week, Grant Union has 192 students in grades 9-12, he noted.

In 2006-2007, the average daily membership for the school was listed at 304 students. In 2007-08, it declined to 250; in 2008-09 to 247; in 2009-10 to 237; and in 2010-11, to 208, Shelley said.
