Purnell collects key hit, Western Baptist wins season opener

SALEM - The Western Baptist College baseball team opened the 2004 season on Saturday, Feb. 21, with a come-from-behind 9-6 victory over NCAA Division II St. Martin's College in a game played at George Fox University.

After breaking out to a 4-0 lead through three innings of play, the Warriors trailed, 6-5, when the Saints brought home a pair of runs in the top of the seventh.

But junior, Brian Purnell, a Grant Union High School graduate, delivered a key two-run double as Western Baptist responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Scott Fitchett, a freshman from Sandpoint, Idaho, picked up the win in relief for the Warriors who pounded out a total of 15 hits.

Junior, Sean Rybar from Shoreline, Wash., highlighted the offensive attack going 4-for-5 at the plate.

It was the fifth consecutive season-opening victory for Western Baptist.
