PENDLETON – The National Weather Service has posted a red flag warning for thunderstorms to sweep over a wide swath of the Cascades and Eastern Oregon.

The agency said thunderstorms with abundant lightning are possible, starting this afternoon and continuing through Thursday night.

For John Day and much of Grant County, the Weather Service set the chance of thunderstorms at 30 percent or more through tonight.

The storms are expected to start with light precipitation, with the best chance of a wetting rain overnight.

The red flag warning – in effect from 2 p.m. today to 11 p.m. – signals the presence of critical fire conditions: abundant and dry fuels, low humidity, winds, warm temperatures, and lightning storms.
