MT. VERNON – Mary Roy’s first airplane ride will be a doozie.

The Mt. Vernon teen, a track star at Grant Union Junior-Senior High School, will take a 17-hour flight next month to Australia, to compete in the Down Under Sports Tournament.

Roy was picked for the tournament earlier this year, but needed to raise money for travel expenses.

She reached her goal through donations from local businesses, a pancake feed, a jewelry sale and more.

Roy will depart July 1 from Boise, fly to Los Angeles and then on the Brisbane, Australia.

She’ll be part of the U.S. West Central Conference track team. Two other Oregon athletes also will make the trip, a girl from Culver and a boy from La Pine.

The tourney is expected to draw a field of contenders from around the globe – New Zealand, Australia, Japan, the Pacific island nations, China, Europe and the United States.

Roy plans to compete in the long jump, triple jump and 200-meter run events.

She will return home on July 9.
