PRAIRIE CITY - It seemed fitting that the clouds began spitting bits of snow just minutes after Sandy Murray explained the theme for Prairie City's upcoming community garage sale.
"It's 'Getting Out of Hibernation,'" she said. "We decided we needed to have something to spur people to start getting out and about."
Murray, co-owner of Prairie City Hardware, and other merchants are helping organize the big sale, set for Saturday, June 2.
By then, May's chilly days could give way to more summery weather, and local residents will be ready to welcome visitors.
The garage sale is in its second year. About 17 sales were part of the event last year, and organizers are hoping for an even bigger turnout this time.
Residents who want to hold garage sales as part of the event are asked to call Murray at 820-3739 or Wanda Winegar at 820-3675. Participants pay a $5 fee, which helps with advertising for the event.
Prairie City merchants will have maps showing the locations of all the sales.
The organizers are meeting May 16 to firm up the plans for this year's sale. They hope to include the Prairie City School and its students in activities, to make the event a communitywide function.
"This is for the people of Prairie City," Murray said. "They have a chance to clear things out for spring, make some money and have some fun."
