JOHN DAY - Santa may not be coming yet, but a shop full of his goodies is here.

Santa's Candles and Gifts at 131 S. Canyon Blvd. in John Day will open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23.

Seasonal and year-round goodies that will be available in the shop include model trains and supplies, custom and pre-made laser cut crystals, Japanese tea sets, soaps from Oregon and Vermont, coffee from Oregon and Alaska, Swiss Colony and Hickory Farms products, Christmas ornaments, and animal and train photographs.

Soy beads and scented tarts made by Gibson's wife, Sue, will also be featured as well as warmers to heat them. They also plan to carry indoor and outdoor holiday inflatables.

The shop will also have a small cafe area with coffee, pastries and wi-fi services.

Gibson and his wife recently moved to Grant County from Union, where they lived and ran the business for a year. Prior to that, they lived in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Gibson is a retired railroad engineer. He worked on the Illinois division of the Santa Fe Railroad and then for Burlington-Northern.

The couple had a booth with their gift items at this year's Grant County Fair and, according to Gibson, they fell in love with the area.

"I just love the people here," he said.

Regular hours for Santa's Candles and Gifts will be 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday.

At the Oct. 23 grand opening, there will be free coffee and cake, and a power energy bands demonstration by John Bennett.
