PRAIRIE CITY - Grant County residents can get rid of their old cars, appliances and junk metal for free in June.

A scrap metal recycling dropoff site will be set up on four Saturdays, starting June 4, near the Co-Gen plant in Prairie City. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Signs will direct the way from Highway 26. Volunteers will be on hand to help unload materials.

There is no fee to drop materials off, although donations will be accepted. Wurdinger Recycling will take the materials, with proceeds to benefit HOWDY Town and Prairie City Athletic Complex projects.

The site will accept all sorts of scrap metal, old appliances, barb wire, and even cars. This year, organizers said they won't take tires, which can be recycled through Les Schwab. Also not allowed: trailers and camper tops, because of the wood and nonmetal materials they include.

People who have materials but no way to get them to the site can call Kathy Smith at 541-620-0343 to arrange pickup.
