Sea Dragons shine in first meet

LA GRANDE - The John Day Sea Dragons swimming team had a good outing in their first meet of the season finishing in sixth place at the 11-team La Grande Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, June 26-27.

With several members of the team still involved in Little League baseball and softball, Sea Dragons head coach Stacie Holmstrom said only 11 competitors made the trip to La Grande.

"We're very proud of our swimmers and I thought we did very well for our first meet of the year," she said.

Natasha Holmstrom, competing in the 15-18-year-old girls division, had the best overall finishes for the team, capturing third place in the 50 and 100 freestyles, the 200 individual medley and 200 freestyle events. She also finished sixth in the 100 breaststroke.

In the girls 13-14-year-old bracket, Cheyenne Valade was fourth in the 100 freestyle, took fifth in the 200 individual medley, and had a pair of sixth-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke and 100 butterfly events.

Also in the 13-14-year-old division, Jonna Porter finished ninth in the 100 breaststroke and came in 10th in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

Rounding out the girl's point winners was Cherise Holmstrom who placed seventh in the 25 freestyle, had a pair of eighth-place finishes in the 25 backstroke and 100 freestyle events and came in 10th in the 50 freestyle.

For the boys, Bret Lauer was the top finisher placing second in the 200 individual medley for 13-14-year-olds.

He also took sixth in the 100 backstroke, seventh in the 50 freestyle, and had a pair of ninth-place finishes in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke events.

Also in the 13-14-year-old division, Bill Sevey finished fifth in the 200 breaststroke, seventh in the 100 freestyle, eighth in the 100 breaststroke and 10th in the 50 freestyle.

Cole Hawkins had a pair of seventh-place finishes in the 50 backstroke and 100 breaststroke for 11-12-year-old boys, and also came in 10th in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle races to complete the Sea Dragons' score card.

Other Sea Dragons competing at the meet included Logan Delano, Arleigh DesJardin and Blake Tirico.

The Sea Dragons have this weekend off and return to action on Saturday, July 10 at the Prineville Invitational.
