JOHN DAY - About 25 residents aired concerns at a July 28 John Day City Council meeting regarding part of a planned bicycle/pedestrian path along Canyon Creek and the John Day River.

Some of the comments were heated and almost all were in opposition to the portion of the path involving an area from Brent Street near the Catholic Church up to Highway 26 by El Teulito restaurant.

Several concerns were expressed at the meeting including increased traffic, loss of privacy, garbage in the creek, rapists, kidnappers, trespassers, thieves and children's safety when the creek runs high.

Mike Cosgrove, who is spearheading the project, decided on July 29 to scrap that portion of the project, also known as Section 2.

He called the turnout at the meeting, an "extremely well organized grass roots effort."
