CANYON CITY - Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer took second place in the LAW and ORDER Magazine's StreetFit Challenge.

His accomplishment was noted in an article online. The magazine challenged law enforcement officers last year to eat healthier and work out to lose weight and get fit.

Palmer said he used the local Eagle Challenge, sponsored by the Blue Mountain Eagle, as a springboard for the other fitness contest. With diet and exercise, he dropped from 226 pounds in March to 204 pounds in September, and also reported improved blood pressure.

"At about five months, my clothes no longer fit," he told the magazine. "I had to purchase a new belt. My duty belt kept sliding down over my hips."

The first-place winner was a sheriff's deputy from Boone, Iowa, and third place went to a police officer in Apex, N.C.
