LONG CREEK - With just six players on the roster, new Long Creek High School girls head basketball coach Staci Witt can only hope everyone stays healthy and remains academically eligible for the 2003-04 season.
"We may be small in numbers but these girls don't lack enthusiasm," Witt said. "They have a positive attitude and have been working hard."
Long Creek is hoping to get back on the winning track in the 2003-04 season after failing to reach the District 4-1A tournament for the past two seasons.
Last year, the Mountaineers struggled through an injury-plagued season finishing with a 4-10 record in the TriCo League and 5-17 overall.
It's going to be an uphill battle for the Mountaineers with just one player returning from last year's team and five young players. Senior Cassi Ross, who has three years of varsity experience, is the lone returning player to the starting lineup. After that, the Mountaineer roster consists of three foreign exchange students and a pair of freshmen.
Exchange students on the team include juniors Shiori Minamihara from Japan and Miriam Stenzel from Germany, along with senior Dani Russo from Brazil.
Rounding out the Mountaineer roster are freshmen April Drew and A.J. McHatton.
"This season could be a learning experience for both me and my players," Witt said.
In addition to having an inexperienced team, 2003 will be the first year Witt has coached basketball, but reported she has prior coaching experience with the Long Creek Junior High School volleyball program.
Long Creek opens the season with home games against the Prairie City junior varsity on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 11-12.
Thursday's game at Prairie City is set for a 4 p.m. tipoff and the Friday game on the Mountaineers' home court begins at 2 p.m.
The Mountaineers will then be idle until Friday and Saturday, Jan. 2-3, when they host the Long Creek Tournament with teams from Ukiah, Burnt River and Monument/Dayville scheduled to participate in the two-day annual event.
