MONUMENT - Hikers recently discovered that vandals have defaced a plaque left long ago atop Bull Run Rock, located in the Monument Rock area.

Katy Beliveau said she and friends who were hiking the rock trail were dismayed to find that the wording on the marker had been scratched out so that it is illegible.

The hike is a favorite of hers, and the plaque always seemed a touching tribute to someone who loved the place.

"It had clearly been there a long time," she said.

Beliveau hopes that it might be possible to re-engrave the marker. However, now she's struggling to remember the exact wording of the plaque and the name of the person it memorialized.
