Strawberry marathon hits its stride

JOHN DAY - Clear skies and moderate temperatures on Saturday, Sept. 13, made conditions ideal for the annual Strawberry Mountain Half (Fast) Marathon and 10K walk.

A total of 48 runners were on hand for the event including 28 in the half marathon, seven in the 10K competitive run and 13 in the 5K stroll.

In the ladies half of the marathon, Sonna Smith from Seneca had the top time with a run of 1:43.50.

Portland's Kalen Abbott was the men's winner in a time of 1:13.12.

Christy Waldner from Dayville won the women's half of the 10K competitive run in a time of 1:10.29, and Terry Farrell from John Day won the men's half of the race at 1:18.59.

Participants in the 5K stroll included Jake Waldner, Mildred Allen, Kathy Buckner, Linda Underwood and Julia Davis.

Runners from all over the John Day Valley participated in the event which included runners from Portland, Bend, Pendleton, Burns, Hines, Albany, Eugene, Lake Oswego, Roseburg, Terrebonne, Imbler, Lebanon and Beaver.

Also entered in the event were seven team members from Warner Pacific College coached by David Lee, who was a coach at Prairie City High School from 1969-71.
