PORTLAND - Julio Martinez, a junior at Grant Union High School, was among the top 36 artists at the Oregon 2007 Federal Junior Duck Stamp Competion on March 22.

Martinez placed third in his division for his piece "Paraiso," for paradise.

"I was kind of excited because I didn't think I would do that good," Martinez said.

He used watersoluble color pencils and the painting took over a month to complete.

Martinez is the son of Magdalena Martinez of John Day. He works as a waiter at the El Cocinero restaurant in John Day. He is on the Grant Union golf team and enjoys other teenage pursuits, such as playing video games.

Martinez hopes to attend ITT Tech in Portland where he will study computer designing.

The Federal Junior Duck Stamp program is sponsored by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife. It is a nationwide competition. This was the 15-year anniversary of the program.
