The annual county spelling bee was held May 11 at the Elks Lodge. More than 50 students from five schools throughout the county came to put their spelling skills to the test.

First place spelling bee winners, grades fourth through 12th, are invited to the State Spelling Bee Contest at the state fair Labor Day weekend.

Winners of first through third place were:

Primary division (first through third grade):

1st: Derrik Rider, Seneca School, third grade.

2nd: Treiquella Osborne, Monument School, third grade.

3rd: Anna Conley, Monument School, second grade.

Division one (fourth through fifth grade):

1st: Annaliese Henry, Humbolt Elementary, fifth grade.

2nd: Steven Wright, Prairie City, fifth grade.

3rd: Jared Jacobsen, Long Creek, fifth grade.

Division two (sixth through eighth grade):

1st: Brianna Murphy-Johnston, Seneca School, eighth grade.

2nd: Gareth Jones, Mt. Vernon Middle School, eighth grade.

3rd: Stephen Binger, Long Creek, sixth grade.

Division three (ninth through 12th grade):

1st: Mitch Workman, Grant Union, senior.

2nd: Otilia Pang, Grant Union, sophomore.

3rd: Yazzie Voigt, Prairie City, senior.
