UPDATE: The police released a statement Thursday morning with more details, including the name of the officer involved in the shooting. Details to come.

A suspect was shot and killed and an officer was wounded Wednesday afternoon across the street from Wilson High School in Portland, police said.

Police were responding to reports of a suspicious vehicle in the area and a confrontation followed.

The officer suffered non life-threatening wounds and was taken to a Portland hospital.

Monique Rogers lives nearby. She says she was sitting on the lawn at Wilson High School with a friend.

Rogers says she heard, "Five gun shots going off in rapid succession."

Area roads were closed as police responded to the area, and several Tri-Met bus lines were detoured.
