A question for many traveling the main street through Mt. Vernon at night has been, "Where are the lights at John Laliberte and Sue Newstetter's home?"

Their lights, which had gotten progressively brighter over the years, winning third place in the OTEC and Grant County Chamber of Commerce lighting contest last year, have been whittled down to the Grinch being pulled by his dutiful dog, Max.

"What sort of statement are they making?" one might ask.

Newstetter said they've gotten a lot of calls about this year's display. "My husband ran out of steam this year," she said. After he endured two bouts of the flu her husband asked her, 'Can I take the year off?' She consented.

Their lights which normally take "days and days" to put up were on in just a matter of minutes. Newstetter said her husband announced, '12 minutes - done!'

The fanciful display may make a return in the future, but for now Christmas-light seekers can enjoy the humor in this Mt. Vernon yard.
